Toon Laurense is a painter from the Netherlands that we recently discovered on Instagram. His works, in oils, are striking in their complexity when studied closely. Often with repeating square patterns in different sizes and colours, the artist only has a preliminary premonition about each piece, which is prone to change before the first brushstroke of the foundation is put on canvas.
In the past he made paintings which were mathematically mapped out and calculated. Nowadays he has abandoned this method by trusting his natural faculties: his body, mind and intuition in relation to the canvas. It evolves from nothing.
Each piece of the painting that you examine closer, shows that it is a work of sophistication. It consists of a multitude of layers, a wide array of colours and of a display of a wide variety of techniques of applying the paint, tearing apart, folding, curling, and smearing out. This is an innovative method of working and has yielded interesting results.
We believe Toon Laurense is one to watch and will have much to offer as he progresses. We will keep in touch with his gallery and provide updates in the future.
